Landmine and Explosive Awareness in Conflict-Affected Areas

🎙️ Podcast For Change

Myanmar has endured decades of landmine and explosive contamination. As an agricultural country, farmers, villagers, and civilians continue to suffer the long-term consequences of the uncontrolled use of landmines, IEDs, and other explosive weapons in conflicts between the military junta and armed resistance forces.

According to MAG International, Myanmar recorded the highest number of landmine and explosive casualties globally in 2024, with 2,209 deaths, exceeding figures from countries such as Ukraine and Afghanistan. With the conflict ongoing, there is no clear sign that these numbers will decrease in 2025 or in the near future.

As a podcast network, Burma Podcast Network does not have the capacity to conduct clearance operations or direct on-the-ground interventions. What we can do is work alongside community educators, trainers, and practitioners to raise awareness and share life-saving information. This landmine podcast series focuses on practical knowledge that communities can understand and apply in their daily lives, including:

This landmine podcast series is part of BPN’s Podcast For Change program. Podcast for Change is a collective effort supported by community-based organizations and international partners who choose to remain anonymous. Through this collaboration, they share data, expert knowledge, and practical support with Burma Podcast Network to help amplify urgent community awareness needs.

In 2025, BPN produced 15 landmine awareness–related advocacy contents across Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Telegram. Full podcast episodes are available on podcast platforms such as Spotify and Apple Podcasts. To reach people without reliable internet access, and with the support of local communities, BPN also distributed small FM radio units with preloaded episodes.

Through the landmine awareness campaign, BPN’s social media content reached over 60,000 engagements, while full podcast episodes accumulated more than 200 listening hours.

In the midst of ongoing civil conflict, landmine awareness remains both highly relevant and deeply neglected. The widespread use of landmines, IEDs, and unexploded shells continues to block the possibility for displaced communities to return home. Farmland, village paths, school playgrounds, and religious spaces remain hazardous due to explosives. Myanmar has not yet reached a stage of recovery, and the soil that once sustained life has not had the chance to heal.

BPN expresses deep respect for community educators, trainers, and frontline practitioners who continue this work under difficult and often dangerous conditions. Their experience and local knowledge guide each episode and advocacy content. BPN works closely with them and with technical experts to ensure accuracy and to avoid harmful or misleading information. We hope these podcast episodes can serve as small but meaningful educational agents, especially for hard-to-reach and conflict-affected areas where access to formal training and reliable information remains limited.

Despite the challenges of social media algorithms that rarely favor non-entertainment content, frequent internet shutdowns, and platform restrictions, Burma Podcast Network will continue producing landmine awareness content. This work is guided by a simple purpose: to reduce harm, to share knowledge that can save lives, and to support children, farmers, civilians, and all those who continue to walk on land shaped by conflict and unseen danger beneath the surface.
